“The Last Ship,” a post-apocalyptic maritime series produced by Michael Bay, is gearing up for its season finale.

Episode 12 of Season 2, titled “Cry Havoc,” has the crew of the USS Nathan James on the offensive. Regarding a strategy for dealing with their main antagonist Sean Ramsey (Brian F. O'Byrne), a stern Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) tells his crew, “We’re not hiding any longer and we’re not waiting for Ramsey to make the first move.”

“This ends today,” he says.

Whatever drama and trauma occurs as the series winds down will surely be expanded upon next season. Variety reports that the seafaring saga has just been green lit for a 13-episode third season.

Season 3 is set to premiere in summer 2016.

“The Last Ship,” based on a novel by William Brinkley, became this summer’s No. 1 basic cable scripted series for adults 25-54.

Rhona Mitra, the actress who plays Dr. Rachel Scott on the series, recently spoke to Aced Magazine about the technical research that has gone into bringing her character to the small screen. “For my own personal reasons, I’ve been involved in the study of the world’s neurotoxins,” said the 39-year-old actress, who started work in the late 1990s as the real life model for the “Tomb Raider” heroine Lara Croft.

The British actress, who first came to prominence with her stints on “Party of Five” and “The Practice,” said that she has been learning how the human race has been impacted by ubiquitous pandemics.

“Everything from the problems with water and fracking to GMOs. I’m interested in the remediation to these problems,” she said.

The actress is grateful for the educational opportunities “The Last Ship” has given her. “When this project came along, I had been doing a lot of physical action roles, so it was a lovely opportunity to explore a more cerebral character,” she added.

“The Last Ship” airs on Sundays on TNT at 9 p.m. Watch the episode preview:
