'Borderlands' Movie: Film Based on Take-Two Interactive's Video Game Title Coming
Another role-playing video game is set to hit the big screen soon. Word is out that Lionsgate is now developing a movie based on the popular video game from Take-Two Interactive, "Borderlands."
The announcement was made via a press statement released on Lionsgate's official website.
According to the statement, Lionsgate is partnering with Borderlands' publisher 2K and developer Gearbox Software with producers Avi and Ari Arad to make a film adaptation of the hit video game from Take-Two Interactive.
The project is part of the entertainment company's move to feature more stable and established brands and franchises in its film line-up.
"Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairmen, Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, to Variety.
Both executives believe that their take on "Borderlands" will be loyal to what made the video game popular to its fans.
"The 'Borderlands' games don't pull any punches, and we'll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise," added both executives.
In 2014, former Nerdist Industries' CEO, Peter Levin, joined Lionsgate as president of interactive ventures and games.
The video game shipped more than 26 million copies all over the globe after its release in 2009.
"Borderlands" is set outside the earth in a faraway planet called Pandora. The main character's mission is to find a vault that is filled with weapons and advanced armaments made from alien technology. In the process of finding this vault, the main character encounters dangerous extraterrestrials, which will stop at nothing to prevent the human from discovering the weapons.
During the PAX Prime Panel, Levin expressed his delight with the collaboration to create "Borderlands."
"We're so humbled to be able to work with Borderlands," said the president to the audience via GameSpot. "It's an important property, and we're going to make sure we carry through."
Take-Two Interactive CEO and Chairman is also pleased with the upcoming project.
"Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands," noted the CEO. He added, "This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight 'Borderlands' current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world."
Lionsgate announced that the feature film is a tent-pole project for the franchise. No release date has been set for the upcoming movie.
The entertainment company is known for bringing the YA novel, "The Hunger Games" trilogy into the big screen.
