Boxing News 2015: Miguel Cotto Ducking Gennady Golovkin?
The World Boxing Council (WBC) declared that the winner of the Miguel Cotto-Saul Alvarez fight should defend the middleweight title against the winner of the upcoming Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux showdown.
However, Golovkin, who is favored to win against Lemieux in October, might not get the chance to unify the middleweight world titles if Cotto successfully defends his title against Alvarez.
Cotto, who will go up against Alvarez on Nov. 21 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, insisted that he will not let any organization dictate his next move if he wins against Canelo.
"Nobody handles Miguel Cotto's career but Miguel Cotto," Cotto told BoxingScene.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman remained firm on their stance that Golovkin should get a shot if he emerges victorious against Lemieux.
Sulaiman pointed out that the Cotto-Alvarez WBC middleweight title showdown was finalized after Golovkin and his promoters agreed to step aside, with the condition that the 33-year-old Kazakh will get an immediate title shot against either Cotto or Canelo.
"Golovkin has stepped aside from this bout and the winner of his fight, fights the winner of Cotto-Canelo," Sulaiman told reporters. "It's an agreement which he is involved. I don't like to anticipate or be disrespectful to those fights. The future has a very formidable horizon if it goes to where it's ruled."
While Cotto sounded unsure of facing Golovkin after his upcoming title defense against Alvarez, trainer Freddie Roach is open to the idea of facing the undefeated knockout artist.
Roach said that Golovkin, who holds a perfect 33-0 record with 30 knockout victories, will be a tough nut to crack because of his punching power. However, the Hall of Fame trainer said that he saw weaknesses during Golovkin's title defense against Willie Monroe Jr. in May.
"Obviously he's a good puncher, he's a good fighter," Roach said of Golovkin via BoxingScene. "He cuts the ring off well. His ring generalship, he's very good at that. But he did fatigue in the late rounds and we've never really seen him go late because he knocks everyone out early."
Roach added that he has nothing against Golovkin, who he described as a nice person, but he declared that he is not afraid of the reigning International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight champion. And if he will have it his way, he will allow Cotto to face Golovkin after the Nov. 21 bout against Canelo.
