Manchester United, David De Gea Nearing New Deal After Failed Transfer?
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is reportedly considering signing a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford after his failed transfer to Real Madrid.
De Gea, who has been linked to a move to Real Madrid since last season ended, is in contract with Manchester United until the end of the current season.
According to AS, as reported by ESPN FC, De Gea is now thinking of signing a contract extension with the Red Devils and is determined to reclaim his spot on the starting lineup.
De Gea, who has played 131 matches for the Red Devils since moving to Old Trafford four years ago, has yet to play for Manchester United in the English Premier League.
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal previously confirmed that he will not start De Gea because the Spain international was affected by talks about a possible move to Real Madrid. In turn, Van Gaal opted to start Sergio Romero, who signed a deal with Manchester United during the offseason.
But after Manchester United and Real Madrid failed to finalize the deal for De Gea before the transfer deadline, agent Jorge Mendes reportedly reached out to Van Gaal about a possible contract extension. Mendes also told Van Gaal that De Gea is determined to start for Manchester United again.
However, Marca reported that Real Madrid are not taking the reported negotiation seriously. Spanish La Liga club president Florentino Perez has no plans to hold talks with Manchester United again, but Real Madrid are still determined to acquire De Gea via a free transfer when the 24-year-old's contract ends in June 2016.
"Florentino Pérez has decided not to hold talks with the English club, although that does not mean Los Blancos have completely given up on signing him," Marca wrote. "Real Madrid will wait for the keeper to turn down a new deal with the Premier League side and see out his current contract."
