Nintendo 3DS XL News, Updates, Price: Slight Update to New 3DS Includes New Analog Stick
Nintendo has released an update to the 3DS portable video game console, calling it the New 3DS.
At first, the larger New 3DS XL will be the only model available in the U.S. and the smaller New 3DS will only be available in Europe, Tech Radar reports. The smaller New 3DS starts at about $240 and it will come to the U.S. Sept. 25.
The New 3DS might look very similar to the 3DS, but there are some differences to be noted.
First, there is a brand new analog stick on the right side of the device above the main buttons. This stick is the second analog stick on the New 3DS. The second analog stick provides more 360 degree control for the player in games, like operating the in-game camera in Majora's Mask.
The buttons on the New 3DS have changed in color and now are in the design of a SNES controller.
The clamshell design of the 3DS remains the same on the updated model. The smaller model will be able to have its faceplates swapped out, but the XL version will not. In Japan, there are already 40 faceplates to choose from for the smaller New 3DS.
Another update has been made to the controls as well with the new shoulder buttons. The ZL and ZR buttons will be added next to the L and R buttons near the top of the screen.
One problem encountered with the New 3DS' design is the fact that when players want to access the battery or the microSD slot, they will have to grab a screwdriver.
Nintendo might be assuming that everyone who buys the New 3DS already has a 3DS, and would therefore already have the charger. No charger will be included in the box when a New 3DS is purchased.
The 3D features on the New 3DS will improve. The device will follow players' heads to make sure they are always seeing images in 3D.
The New 3DS will get a faster processor to make games speedier and to allow apps to open quickly. Certain games will only be compatible with the New 3DS and not the old 3DS.
The confusing naming strategy for the 3DS could create some initial problems for buyers, but it looks like a solid device that will sell.
The New 3DS XL can be purchased from Gamestop for $199.99.
