Amazon Tablets Price, Features: $50 Tablets Coming for Holiday Season
Amazon is aiming at budget customers this holiday season.
The Internet retailer will introduce a $50 tablet in time for the holidays, CNet reports.
A 6-inch tablet from Amazon will be introduced this holiday season for just $50, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal. This tablet would be half the price of Amazon's current 6-inch model, the HD Fire. With the $50 price, this would be one of the cheapest tablets available to consumers.
Amazon plans to release more tablets this year, including an 8-inch model and a 10-inch model. These tablets are all expected to be released after the affordable $50 6-inch model. Amazon is not commenting on the reports of new tablets.
Amazon's cheapest tablet is currently the Fire HD 6, which costs $99 with screen saver advertisements. Without the ads, the Fire HD 6 is $114. It is not clear whether the $50 tablet will have these screen saver ads.
The report on the small and cheap Amazon tablet is almost the exact opposite of the news coming from Apple regarding an ultra-large and expensive tablet called the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro is expected to be announced Wednesday at a special Apple event.
The interest in tablets has been declining in recent times, with little changes and upgrades for customers to get excited about. The market is dominated by Apple and Samsung, with Apple owning 24.5 percent of market share and Samsung 17 percent, IDC figures reveal.
Amazon is trying to create new strategies with its electronics division. Last year, the company tried getting into the smartphone business with the Fire smartphone, but it was not a big seller.
The $50 tablet from Amazon would likely have limited features. However, Amazon wants this tablet to be a seller, so it could have some unique features that could surprise these budget customers.
