Apple Upgrade Program: New Program Allows Customers Latest iPhone 6s For Monthly Fee
Wireless carriers are making things difficult when it comes to buying smartphones. Apple wants customers to have an easy way to upgrade to the latest iPhone without having to sign a contract with a wireless carrier.
Apple announced its brand new iPhone Upgrade Program Wednesday at their special press event. Through the program, customers will receive an unlocked iPhone and pay a monthly fee to pay for it. Each year, customers can get a brand new iPhone. According to CNET, this is the first time that Apple has offered an upgrade program like this.
"You get a new iPhone every year; you choose your carrier; it's an unlocked phone," said Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple. "It starts at just $32 a month. It's a 24-month installment, but you can get a new iPhone every single year."
Wireless carriers are getting rid of smartphone subsidies and two-year contracts and are requiring customers to pay the full retail price for these expensive devices. Instead of being able to pay $199 and sign a two-year contract for a brand new entry-level iPhone 6s, customers now have to either pay the entire $649 upfront or pay it in monthly installments.
With Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program, customers will pay for their iPhones through monthly installments paid directly to Apple instead of seeing a new device charge being added to their wireless carrier bills. Customers will also receive AppleCare+ with the program
Sprint has a similar plan that allows customers to upgrade to a new iPhone at any time. This plan is an additional $15 per month added onto their wireless bills.
Apple will begin taking preorders for the iPhone 6s starting Saturday. The phone will go on sale starting Sept. 25 at stores and online.
