Bill Cosby Rape Scandal News Update: Beverly Johnson Says She Forgives Him
Beverly Johnson says she has forgiven famed comedian Bill Cosby for drugging and attempting to sexually assault her more than 30 years ago.
Appearing on a recent episode of "Good Morning America," the former model added, "No one has the right to another's body or sexuality."
The 62-year-old Johnson has long maintained she met Cosby for an audition in the 1980s and instead became a victim of sexual assault. She is one of the more than 40 women, who now publicly allege that he targeted them in a similar fashion over a period that spans more than four decades.
In a statement she previously issued to People magazine, Johnson said, "I hope that the lesson is that rape and any form of sexual assault is wrong, that silencing women's voices is wrong and that protecting a predator over the assaulted for the sake of protecting power is devastating."
Johnson also previously told the magazine the incident changed her forever and has become a permanent part of who she is.
Earlier this week, fellow model Chloe Goins appeared on the "Dr. Phil" show and told the host that she's still struggling after coming forward with her allegations against the now 78-year-old Cosby more than seven years ago.
"It's been really hard, especially with coming out publicly," she said. "Unfortunately, with these types of cases the victim gets really scrutinized and dug into. My life has been completely dug into by people, and it's been a tough road."
Martin Singer, one of Cosby's chief attorneys, has characterized all the accusations levied against his client as unfounded.
Johnson is the first of Cosby's accusers to publicly forgive him and is hopeful the step can lead to even greater dialogue on an even bigger issue.
"I just feel that he's a lighting rod for a much bigger conversation and that conversation would be the rape culture in America," she said.
