Floyd Mayweather Twitter: Champ Annouces Next Opponent: Who Is It?
Floyd Mayweather took to Twitter this week to announce his next opponent as he looks to defend his WBC welterweight title.
"I will be fighting Marcos Maidana May 3rd on Pay-per-view Showtime/CBS," the undefeated boxing champ said via his Twitter account.
Maidana defeated Adrien Broner on Dec. 14 in front of a record audience. So many viewers turned in that the fight marked the third largest audience ever for a fight on Showtime.
"Marcos Maidana's last performance immediately brought him to my attention," Mayweather said. "He is an extremely skilled fighter who brings knockout danger to the ring. I think this is a great fight for me and he deserves the opportunity to see if he can do what 45 others have tried to do before him: beat me."
Maidana also spoke out and expressed his excitement in facing Mayweather.
"I am extremely happy to be facing Floyd Mayweather because it will give me the opportunity to show the world that I am the best welterweight in the division. I just handed a great defensive fighter his first loss and I plan to do the same to Mayweather. I don't care whether he's the best and undefeated. I will bring some real Latino power to him on May 3rd."
It would be a difficult feat for Maidana considering that Mayweather is currently 45-0. Maidana has also done well en route to a 35-3 record but his three losses are the big difference between the two. Besides that, Mayweather simply has more victories under his belt. Considering all of this, Mayweather will enjoy the hype but Maidana could get the last laugh as an underdog.
