Washington Nationals right-handed reliever Drew Storen broke his right thumb. He slammed the lockbox in his locker due to frustration after blowing the lead against the Mets, according to Chelsea Janes of Washington Post via Twitter. He gave up the go-ahead home run to Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth inning, adding to the three walks he issued in the 5-3 loss to the Mets.

Nationals manager Matt Williams commented on the injury, saying that Storen regrets everything that happened. "Regretful that it happened and a little bit embarrassed about it, of course. He's a competitor, and he was frustrated and made a mistake. He's a big guy lost for us, so some other guys will have to step in and do that job. It gets guys in some different roles for sure," Williams told ESPN.

According to the Boston Globe, Dave Dombrowski will build the Red Sox bullpen this offseason and Storen, who is out for the remainder of the season, is one of the likely targets. The reports said the he has a good arm with experience in the setup man and closer roles. The Nationals are said to be keen on trading him this offseason as he is arbitration-eligible for one more season.

According to MLB Buzz, the 28-year-old reliever was in trade talks in 2011, not with the Red Sox but with the Minnesota Twins, involving outfielder Denard Span. Rant Sports noted that the Twins should target Storen in the offseason.

The report said that the Nationals will sell low on Storen in the offseason and the Twins have a hole to fill as closer Glen Perkins is injury-prone and will turn 33 next year, leaving the team with no other reliable right-hander in the bullpen.

Storen was one of the better relievers in the MLB this season before the Nats acquired Jonathan Papelbon from the Phillies. He posted a 1.73 ERA through 36.1 innings pitched with 29 saved games, as reported by Yahoo! Sports.

He was not excited after the trade. He told MLB.com, "I'm aware of the move and I've talked to Mike Rizzo about it. I've talked to my agent about it. We've had some ongoing discussions. Until those have progressed, I'm just going to leave it at that. No comment for now. But as the situation goes, I'll keep you guys posted."

His ERA ballooned to 7.56 after the Papelbon trade, with three blown saves in 18 appearances during August and September. Storen has a 2-2 record during the season with a 3.44 ERA in 58 games.
