‘The Big Bang Theory’ Season 9 Spoilers: Sheldon, Amy Will Have Hard Time Dealing With Breakup
Fans of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy's (Mayim Bialik) awkward romance on the "The Big Bang Theory" may be disappointed when Season 9 premieres next week since it looks like the couple will remain separated for an unspecified amount of time.
As fans will recall, Sheldon and Amy's slow-moving relationship came to a shocking halt in the Season 8 finale of the popular CBS series when Amy told Sheldon that she needed space to "step back and re-evaluate" their relationship. Devastated by the breakup, Sheldon began talking to the Gollum figurine on his desk and pulled out an engagement ring which he apparently planned to give Amy.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Steve Molaro revealed that Sheldon isn't going to take getting dumped well and that there is no word on when/if the couple will get back together. Their split will also have a dramatic effect on their mutual friends, he said.
Amy will stick to her guns in the new season, but Sheldon will have a hard time handling her rejection, said the showrunner.
"He is a man of science and he's been presented with a problem that he can't just think of a solution for. And it's very frustrating. He doesn't immediately turn to anyone for support; instead, he is going to pursue Amy," Molaro teased.
Instead of focusing on working on the issues that led Amy to break up with him, Sheldon will disregard her request for space and relentlessly pursue her.
"His thought processes can get pretty misguided in that that he thinks, 'Oh, this will make her jealous and make her like me again,' but that will only make her furious. He's not good at leaving her alone. The one thing she asked for was a little bit of time to think and he's not going to give that to her," said the EP.
Meanwhile, Amy will have a tough time as a newly single woman as well.
"This is all new to her and this is as difficult for her as it is for him. He's not making it any easier, so I think they are both feeling their way through this and going through and experiencing feelings and emotions that I don't even think they were expecting," Molaro teased.
Molaro added that there is no real timetable as to when the couple is going to get back together.
"Right now, the dynamic has been fascinating and interesting. We're seeing all new colors for both of them as well as the way it impacts the group. There's not a set plan -- we're feeling this out along the in same way Amy is."
However, Sheldon and Amy won't be the only ones struggling with the end of "Shamy." Apparently, their friends will see it as a difficult adjustment, too.
"It's weird for Sheldon and Amy to be in a room together, so there are times when Amy is not there, when it's boys' nights and girls' nights. It's a little bit of a divorce, and it's something that the group is feeling their way through," said Molaro.
Season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" will premiere on Monday, Sept. 21 on CBS.
