Patrick Kane Sexual Assault News Update: Blackhawks Star Reports to Camp, Insists He's Done Nothing Wrong
Speaking with the media for the first time since a Buffalo woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in his lakefront home, Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane insisted on Thursday that he had "done nothing wrong."
According to ESPN, 26-year-old Kane was on hand for the opening day of training camp for the defending champion Blackhawks at the University of Notre Dame. The veteran forward has not been criminally charged in the case, but a grand jury is rumored to still be probing the allegations.
Reports are the woman, described as being in her 20s, told investigators that she met Kane at a downtown Buffalo sports bar in late August. Later that night she and a friend accompanied him to his estate to continue partying. While there, the woman told authorities Kane "overpowered" and assaulted her.
"I cannot apologize enough for the distraction this has caused my family, teammates, this incredible organization and, of course, our fans," said Kane, who was joined at a table by Blackhawks president John McDonough, general manager Stan Bowman and coach Joel Quenneville. "While I have too much respect for the legal process to comment on an ongoing matter, I am confident once all the facts are brought to light I will be absolved of having done [anything] wrong."
Kane later told reporters he realized they had many more questions for him concerning the matter, but he cited the ongoing investigation as his primary reason for refraining from further detail.
"This just isn't the right time to do it with my respect, the Blackhawks' respect for the legal process and what's going on," he said. "I really can't comment about that right now."
Later, McDonough defended the organization's decision to allow Kane to join the team with so much baggage hanging over his head. Based on discussions with Kane's legal representatives, McDonough said, the decision was made to allow Kane to join the team for camp. He added the team will reevaluate the star forward's standing with the team if any indictment is announced.
Kane's flashy skills and postseason success have made him one of the NHL's most recognizable stars, recently prompting the organization to sign him to an eight-year, $84 million extension.
