‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ Reviews: Game Earns Rave Feedback, Last for the Franchise?
"Metal Gear Solid," one of history's favorite video games, has been around since 1987. In a span of almost three decades, the game has had countless of accomplishments. The recent weeks has marked several of these significant milestones: the release of the latest game in the series "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," the ensuing critical acclaim, and recognition as one of the best games in the market. With this momentum, it's likely the franchise can keep going past the 30-year mark. The question is, will they?
The latest edition of the franchise, "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," was released on Sept. 1. It was an instant hit with the critics as long-time fans and new players rave over the action adventure game that's meant to be a prequel to the 1987 original.
A review from Game Spot called it the best of the franchise in a glowing piece saying, "The best elements from the past games are here, and the new open-world gameplay adds more to love on top. When it comes to storytelling, there has never been a Metal Gear game that's so consistent in tone, daring in subject matter, and so captivating in presentation."
Other reviews, such as Time and Telegraph, similarly laud "The Phantom Pain," calling it the best of an already accomplished series.
Adding to the universal acclaim of "Metal Gear Solid," it has been recently declared as the best original PlayStation game of all time, in a fan poll initiated by Sony to mark the console's 20th anniversary.
A report from PlayStation Lifestyle revealed that the game won over other successful game franchises, with "Final Fantasy VII," "Crash Bandicoot" and "Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped" coming in as runners-up.
Despite these recent achievements, a report from The Inquisitr says that publisher Konami is not planning on continuing the long-standing hit video game series. According to French website GameBlog, the fans have seen the end of the beloved franchise.
"No new 'Metal Gear' is actually actually being prepared at any level whatsoever," the source reportedly said. "Not even in pre-production, or in the planning stage. Nothing."
Conflict between developer Kojima Productions led by original game designer Hideo Kojima and Konami has been well-documented over the year. A report from Game Spot last July revealed that Kojima Productions has been disbanded, according to Japanese voice actor Otsuka Akio.
However, a user in the fan community at Reddit reached out to Konami Customer Support for a comment on the supposed discontinuation of "Metal Gear Solid." Although an official statement from Konami has not been released yet, a company representative assured that fans will be seeing more of the franchise in the future.
"I can promise you that we're definitely not leaving 'Metal Gear' behind or anything like that," the representative responded. "...We're still definitely working on console games and franchises such as Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania, PES and all the rest."
