Gabrielle Union Speaks on Fertility Struggles With Dwyane Wade
Gabrielle Union recently opened up about her fertility issues in an in-depth interview with Redbook Magazine.
The "Being Mary Jane" actress touched on the struggles she and husband Dwyane Wade have faced in contemplating when the opportune time to have their first child.
"The reality is that women are discriminated against in the workplace for being mothers," Union tells Redbook. "As much as there are strides being made -- you get pregnant, your career takes a hit. You can't have a bad day. Don't you dare cry at work. Don't raise your voice. Especially if you're a black woman in corporate America -- now you're 'the angry black woman.'"
While the 42-year-old has always put her career first, she speaks on how often females can be shamed for such taking non-traditional routes in life.
"There's a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger," Union said. "The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you're wearing a scarlet letter."
While Union deliberates on when and if she will have her own kids, she seems happy to take on the role of stepmom to Wade's sons Zion, 8, and Zaire, 13, his children from a former relationship, and Xavier, 20 months, who was born while the couple were on a temporary break.
The actress also brings up how despite their nine-year age difference she has no trouble relating to Wade, although the age gap does become apparent from time to time.
"I realized his friends, his teammates, were conceived when I was, like, a senior in high school," Union said. "I was in high school at the same time as their parents! Sometimes he'll be like, 'Oh, my God, he's so old!' about someone who's 35. But, Dwyane's an old 33, and I'm a young 42, so it balances out."
Union and Wade got married in August 2014 in Miami at the Chateau Artisan castle.
Erin Andrews, Maria Menounos and Union were all chosen to appear on their own Redbook covers for the month of October.
