The Prairie View City Council in Texas voted on Tuesday to rename the street where Sandra Bland was arrested in her honor.

Back in August, the city council voted to rename the road in Bland's memory. However, a council member reopened the issue on Tuesday, since not everyone had a chance to speak at the initial meeting.

"If I get pulled over, they're gonna see Sandra Bland Parkway and think twice," supporter Latoya Smith said at Tuesday's public meeting, reports USA Today.

On the other hand, some longtime Prairie View residents said Bland did not represent their community.

"There are other people in the community that are worthy of having a street renamed after them," said Tyron Cyrus Mattox. "Sandy Bland was just here for a minute."

Supporters, however, argue that her arrest and death represent injustice for black Americans at the hands of law enforcement as a whole.

The street signs are scheduled to be changed to Sandra Bland Parkway in October. Bland's name will be seen from the entrance of her alma mater.

Bland was pulled over and arrested for a traffic violation on July 10, reported USA Today. The 28-year-old African-American woman was then taken to the Waller County Jail, where she was found hanged in her cell three days later. The Harris County's medical examiner ruled the death as a suicide; however, the Prairie View A&M graduate's death sparked national outrage.

In video footage of the black woman's confrontational arrest, Bland expressed frustration for being stopped after she failed to signal during a lane change. She told state trooper Brian Encinia that she was changing lanes in order to get out of his way. The trooper asked her to put out her cigarette; but she said it was her right to smoke within her own car.

That's when Encinia proceeded to tell her to get out of the vehicle. In response, Bland asked why he was forcing her out of the vehicle. The trooper did not respond and instead threatened to tase her.

At other points in the video, Bland can be heard screaming that the officer slammed her head on the ground and that her handcuffs were too tight.
