Just one day after Pope Francis delivered a formal address at the White House, Donald Trump said the pontiff was wrong about how the U.S. should handle immigration and global warming.

Pope Francis talked about these issues and several other deeply divisive political topics during his speech before President Barack Obama and 11,000 people on the South Lawn on Wednesday morning. He spent the most time discussing his concern over global warming and praising Obama's effort to curb climate change.

"Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our common home, we are living at a critical moment of history," said Francis, according to The New York Times.

At another point, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church referenced the United States as a nation of immigrants, noting that he, too, is the "son of immigrants." He also urged Americans to "not be afraid to welcome" immigrants into the U.S.

When asked about his thoughts on Francis' speech during an interview on CNN's "New Day," Trump described Francis' words on immigration as "beautiful," but added that the country cannot afford to support the influx of undocumented residents.

"Well, I think his words are beautiful and I respect the Pope and I like the Pope very much," Trump told CNN's Alisyn Camerota. "I will say this, we have a country that is going through tremendous problems. We owe $19 trillion. So No. 1, we can't afford this process."

Trump also made note of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and warned that they are taking jobs away from Americans.

The 2016 Republican presidential candidate also expressed fundamental disagreements with the Pope about climate change, saying that he is "not a believer in climate change."

"It's called weather changes and you have storm and you have rain and you have beautiful days," Trump said.

"I think that clean air is a pressing problem. You want to have clean air, clean water. That's very important to me, and I've won many environmental awards," he said.

"Look, it's weather. We have bad floods. I can't watch the evening news anymore. Every time you turn on the evening news, they show there's a big rain storm, there's a tornado, there's this. I mean, you can't watch the news anymore. And so it's weather, and it's been that way for so long," Trump explained.

Trump went on to say that clean energy policies to reduce CO2 emissions would "imperil jobs."

The U.S. should not "imperil the companies within our country" by imposing environmental restrictions that would "imperil jobs ... actually the middle class, and actually the lower classes are going to be the people with no money," he said.

"I believe in clean air, immaculate air. I believe in clean water, all of those things, but I don't think we can destroy our country," added the GOP front-runner.
