'WWE SummerSlam' to Return to Barclays Center in 2016 and 2017
After a successful "SummerSlam" weekend this year, WWE announced that the "Biggest Party of the Summer" will return to New York City in 2016 and 2017.
According to the company's official website, WWE has agreed with Barclays Center and NYC & Company to a multi-year deal to bring "SummerSlam" to the Barclays Center in August 2016 and 2017. In addition, both NXT and "Monday Night Raw" will also be a part of "SummerSlam" weekend.
WWE released the dates for "SummerSlam" weekend for both 2016 and 2017. You can check those out below:
2016
- Saturday, Aug. 20 -- NXT
- Sunday, Aug. 21 -- "WWE SummerSlam"
- Monday, Aug. 22 -- "WWE Monday Night"
2017
- Saturday, Aug. 19 -- NXT
- Sunday, Aug. 20 -- "WWE SummerSlam"
- Monday, Aug. 21 -- "WWE Monday Night Raw"
Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center, is excited that "SummerSlam" is coming back to the Barclays Center for two straight years.
"We're excited to be hosting WWE SummerSlam for the next two years," Yormark said. "We had an incredible experience this past August and are looking forward to continuing our partnership with WWE and NYC & Company."
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also issued a statement regarding "SummerSlam" coming back to the city for two years.
"We are thrilled to build on the success of the 2015 SummerSlam and welcome WWE back to Brooklyn in 2016 and 2017. Big events like SummerSlam help cement New York City's appeal as a dynamic, high-energy destination," Mayor de Blasio said.
WWE executive vice president of special events John P. Saboor also commented, saying, "We look forward to building on the success of this year's event to take SummerSlam Week to even greater heights."
During this year's "SummerSlam" at the Barclays Center, "NXT Takeover," "WWE SummerSlam" and "WWE Monday Night Raw" were all sold out.
Former "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart guest hosted the "SummerSlam" event. In a highlight of the weekend, Stewart made his presence felt when he cost John Cena his United States Championship by attacking him with a steel chair. The event also staged the highly-anticipated fight between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker.
