NFL: Cleveland Browns Players Want Johnny Manziel to Start Over Josh McCown?
Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine made the decision to start quarterback Josh McCown in week three over Johnny Manziel after the former was cleared by the NFL's concussion protocol, per ESPN. He suffered the injury on the first drive of the season opener against the New York Jets and was out against the Tennessee Titans.
"McCown's done everything that we've asked of him in the offseason, so far this year. He'd earned the right to be our starting quarterback. We feel that he gives us the best opportunity to win on Sunday, and that truly was the basis for the decision," coach Pettine said.
Johnny Manziel led the Browns to a win against the Titans, which put Pettine's decision a little confusing. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner was not thrilled with the decision, but he knows that the team comes first.
"I am not going to sit here and say that I love the decision, but I respect coach Pettine and that's the guy that makes the calls for this team. I am going to be a team player and be ready when my number is called," Manziel said.
Cleveland went on to lose against the Oakland Raiders, 27-20 on week three with McCown having a good game throwing 28 out 49 passes, for 341 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, per ESPN stats. But it seems that some Browns players were not happy about the decision of starting McCown over Manziel.
According to TMZ Sports, three anonymous starters on offense want the 22-year-old quarterback to start over the 13-year veteran. One player said, "I love both Johnny and Josh but its [expletive] up when you have Johnny come in and play well and has proven to the team that he is the right person for the job."
"It's frustrating to him and us when you sit a player down when he is playing well. Coach has got to understand you are messing up the chemistry and timing with players and its [expletive] up," the player added.
Another player told TMZ, "The team plays better when Manziel is in the game. I play better when he plays. You can't get better unless you play. We won when he played and coach has got to trust him like he trusts Josh."
"When Johnny is in the game it puts the defense on edge. He doesn't just sit in the pocket, he makes plays. Coach has got to make the change now," the third anonymous player added.
However, coach Pettine was quick to answer "no" when asked if Johnny Manziel will be the next starting quarterback, as reported by NBC Sports. As for the tension in the locker room, wide receiver Andrew Hawkins denied the allegations on Twitter, saying that the TMZ story is not true.
