NFL Trade Update: New England Patriots Send Michael Hoomanawanui To New Orleans Saints
Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui will be sporting a new jersey on week four.
Defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots send the 27-year-old Hoomanawanui to New Orleans Saints, a team with no win yet as of week three, via a trade, NFL.com reported. In return, the Saints gave up defensive end Akiem Hicks from their roster to go to the Patriots.
Will Hoomanawanui, who was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, contribute much in the New Orleans team for them to possibly score their first victory on Sunday?
Basing on his 2010 scouting report featured on NFLDraftScout.com, he is a strong addition to the Saints, The Times-Picayune noted. The scouting report described him as someone who can be a "devastating blocker and solid receiver" when healthy and "who is tough to bring down in the open field." He also has a good work ethic and is said to be a "team leader by words and example."
Hoomanawanui spent two seasons with the Rams and three full seasons with the Patriots, per NFL.com stats. The Illinois has not made a catch yet in his two games with the Patriots, but his fate may also change, especially with his new team relying on his aid with the offense to deliver some meaningful receiving yards.
Will Drew Brees Play on Week 4?
Meanwhile, another immediate problem by the winless Saints (0-3) is if their quarterback Drew Brees will be back in action on Sunday for their fourth appearance on the field. The said game will be against the Cowboys, which currently holds a 2-1 win-loss record, and the current leader in the National Football Conference East, a separate report from NFL.com informed.
Saints coach Sean Payton gave some updates on their quarterback, who reportedly sustained a sprained rotator cuff during week two's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"It's safe to say he is going to throw every day now," Payton said.
Prior to week three's absence, the quarterback, who played for 15 years and missed only one game because of an injury in 2005, per ESPN, felt that he was recovering well.
"I'll see how the shoulder responds tomorrow and the rest of the day, but each day I'm able to do more," the 36-year-old quarterback said.
If he could not make it on Sunday, backup quarterback Luke McCown, who completed 31 of his 38 passes on week three against the Carolina Panthers, would do his part.
