After a 1-3 start to the season, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Joe Philbin on Monday.

ESPN is reporting that the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Philbin after the team's loss to the New York Jets in London last Sunday. Philbin becomes the first NFL coach to lose his job this season.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said the decision to fire Philbin was very difficult, but he thinks it was the right move for the team.

"I am extremely disappointed with how we have started the season, but I feel confident that we can improve quickly with the talent we have on our roster," Ross said.

Dolphins tight end coach Dan Campbell will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Ross met with Philbin after the Jets game on Sunday and informed Philbin that his job was safe. When the team landed in the United States, Ross changed his mind and fired him.

With the addition of Ndamukong Suh earlier this offseason, many people believe that the Dolphins will contend with the New England Patriots for the AFC East. However, the team is currently in last place in the division.

The Dolphins have struggled on both sides of the football this season. Miami is ranked No. 23 in total offense and No. 30 in total defense.

According to Bleacher Report, Philbin went 24-28 in four seasons with the team. In his four years, the Dolphins finished under .500 once and at .500 three times. Philbin will also be known as the head coach who survived the Dolphins bullying scandal two years ago.

Earlier this year, he received a contract extension that will pay him through the 2016 season.

It is not known if the Dolphins will hire Campbell as the new head coach next season or if they will look elsewhere.
