Bitcoin CEO Suicide in Singapore: Is the Virtual Currency's Recent Trouble with Hackers to Blame?
An American CEO of a Bitcoin virtual currency company was found dead in Singapore last week.
Twenty-eight-year-old Autumn Radtke, chief executive of First Meta Pte Ld, was discovered outside her apartment on Feb. 26. Police say there was no evidence of foul play, meaning her death was likely to have been a suicide.
Neighbors suspect Radtke may have jumped from her apartment on the 25th floor.
First Meta Ld issued a statement regarding Radtke's apparent suicide:
"The First Meta team is shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of our friend and CEO Autumn Radtke. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and loved ones. Autumn was an inspiration to all of us and she will be sorely missed."
Radtke's death comes after a difficult week in which Bitcoin was involved in a massive scandal involving hackers. Tokyo-based Mt. Gox, formerly the world's largest virtual exchange company, filed for bankruptcy after it loss over $63 million dollars worth of bitcoins. Another Canada-based company also went bankupt when its bitcoins were stolen.
Despite Bitcoin's troubles, Radtke's friends are adamant that her death was due to other issues in her life. Her neighbor Steve Beauregard, who also headed his own virtual currency start-up, said that he had talked with Radtke shortly before her death, and that there were a wealth of issues she was dealing with, personally and professionally.
"This wasn't a bitcoin-related death. She had other things going on in her life," said Beauregard, to Reuters. "Collectively, there were a lot of small factors. ... It appears she picked a permanent solution to a lot of short term problems."
Douglas Adams, director of First Meta, said that the company was not in danger and that Radtke "did a great job as CEO." He also noted that First Meta didn't rely solely on bitcoins, and that they were considering selling the company at some point.
