Russia launched missile strikes at ISIS targets in Syria overnight from ships stationed on the Caspian Sea.

CNN reports Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the strikes, which employed precise long-range missiles that traveled 930 miles to their intended targets.

In total four Russian ships fired 26 missiles into Syria and hit 11 targets, Shoigu said.

The BBC reports Syrian officials say their ground troops have, in the meantime, launched an offensive under Russian air cover. Russia launched their ISIS-directed missiles with cooperation form the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, sending coordinated attacks in numerous towns in Hama and Idlib provinces in western Syria.

Regarding their attacks on Syria, Russia has said it is open to cooperate with the United States. The U.S., however, has so far declined Russia’s invitation.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said coalition forces fighting ISIS in Syria will in no way cooperate with Russia.

"We believe Russia has the wrong strategy," Carter said, noting a sloppiness in Russia’s attacks. "They continue to hit targets that are not IS. ... We believe this is a fundamental mistake."

Despite Carter’s condemnation of Russia’s strategy, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov has hinted that cooperation between his nation and the U.S. was on the horizon.

On Wednesday, he said Russia was ready to take information and intelligence obtained by the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS.

Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told Russia's TASS news agency the two powers needed only to work out some details before cooperation commenced, saying, "We just need to specify some technical details that will be discussed today by representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry and the Pentagon at the expert level."

One very vocal U.S. political figure who is in favor of Russia’s current strike strategy against ISIS is 2016 presidential hopeful Donald Trump.  As RT reports, Trump recently said, “I like that Putin is bombing the hell out of ISIS.” NBC News reports the leading GOP candidate has previously expressed his respect for the Russian leader, saying, "I think I would get along very well with Vladimir Putin.”
