Google announced the rollout of its latest mobile OS update, Android 6.0 Marshmallow or Android M, to the Nexus family of devices during its big Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X unveiling event.

Very soon after, HTC jumped at the chance to list the devices in its lineup that will be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Here's what @HTC tweeted:

So the HTC One M9, One M9+, M8, E9, E9+, ME, E8, M8 EYE, Butterfly 3, Desire 826, Desire 820, and Desire 816 -- every mid-grade-to-premium HTC smartphone released in the last two years -- are all eligible for the Android M update.

This year and last year's HTC One flagships will be getting their Marshmallows roasting the soonest -- before the year is over, at least according to HTC's plans.

For those with newer mid-tier HTC phones, it may be a little longer. And for those with a Desire 820 that are still wondering about the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, HTC has said it is skipping that rollout and focusing directly on delivering Android 6.0. So that's a good sign.

But the announcement also means that if you bought the first HTC One ever, the M7, you're out of luck: no Marshmallow for you, ever.

It may be a good time to get a new device, and HTC is ready to deliver. The company is boasting it will be "one of the first to drop a new Marshmallow device" at its "Be Brilliant" event Oct. 20.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow will bring several improvements and new features to your smartphone, including better battery life through the intelligent system idling process in "Doze" mode, more granular control over app permissions, a smartphone-wide dark theme for low light use, and built-in support for Android Pay mobile payments.
