Microsoft this week introduced the Surface Book, a hybrid laptop that will go head-to-head with the MacBook Pro. The company claims the device is twice as fast as its Apple competitor.

The Microsoft Surface Book is an ultra-light and thin laptop, thinner and lighter than the MacBook Pro, which will also feature the ability to act as a tablet, PC Mag reports.

The Surface Book weighs 3.34 pounds, while the MacBook Pro weighs 3.48 pounds. The Surface device is also thinner, with dimensions of 0.51 x 12.30 x 9.14 inches, compared to the MacBook Pro's dimensions of 0.71 x 12.35 x 8.62 inches.

The screen on the Surface Book will be slightly larger at 13.5 inches compared to the MacBook Pro's 13.3-inch screen. The Surface Book will also have the sharper resolution at 3,000 x 2,000 pixels, compared to the MacBook Pro's 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. Additionally, the Surface Book has a touchscreen display that can be written on or tapped with a finger.

The biggest difference between the two devices is the hinge on the Surface Book, which allows the screen to be rotated all the way back to lie flat on the keyboard. The screen can even be detached from the base to work as a stand-alone tablet. The MacBook Pro's hinge only allows the screen 135 degrees of movement.

The battery life on the MacBook Pro is usually about 11 hours or less. Microsoft says the Surface Book can last up to 12 hours on a single charge.

The entry-level Surface Book starts with a Core i5 processor from Intel and 8GB of memory, just like the entry-level MacBook Pro. Upgrading the Surface Book replaces the i5 with an i7 processor, and adds 16GB of RAM and an excellent graphics card.

The Surface Book is about $100 more than the MacBook Pro, but offers a few more features like the tablet mode and touchscreen. The machines are otherwise pretty equal in most categories, and buyers will likely choose the operating system they prefer when deciding between the two.
