At least 86 people were killed and nearly 200 others injured when a pair of powerful bombs rocked the main train station in Ankara early Saturday, marking the deadliest attack in the Turkish capital in recent times.

CNN reports the bloody explosion occurred while a peace march was being staged involving pro-Kurdish HDP, or People's Democratic Party members. National elections in that region are slated to be held in just over two weeks on Nov. 1.

According to CNN, video from the carnage shows bodies "strewn on sidewalks," and injured people lining the sidewalks as passersby desperately attempt to assist those left bloodied and in pain.

The impact of the deadly blasts shook the foundations of high-rise office buildings throughout the area and officials warned that the death toll could ultimately climb much higher.

While no group has yet to publicly claim responsibility for all the deadly mayhem, suspicion immediately fell on the ISIS terrorist group, or on Kurdish separatists in Turkey.

Turkey officials have largely avoided conflict with ISIS, with much of credit for the truce being given to the release earlier this year of dozens of Turkish hostages recently taken into custody in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

While the terms of the deal were never publicly revealed, Turkey recently changed its stance and allowed the U.S. to launch strikes on ISIS from the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey. The U.S. commenced taking aim from that part of the country sometime in August from the base as part of an agreement between NATO allies and U.S. and Turkey officials.

Previous reports have indicated many Turks have joined the ranks of ISIS, with a large number of the recruits being found in the region Ankara. Some reports even speculate that up to a third of all ISIS members could be Turks.
