Each year we are spoiled with new video game releases on various platforms, but the action and first-person shooting games tend to get a great deal of the attention.

Today, however, we will be switching gears to take a look at sports games released in 2014 to see which ones have fared well and which ones have seemed to flop. In addition, some of the titles listed below have not been released yet.

1. NBA 2K14 -- This game was the clear-cut winner of the year in sports video games. Look no further than the game's sales numbers, which have been amazing as NBA 2K14 competes with some of the best titles in the gaming industry. The game is more realistic than ever and it has catered to gamers on all platforms, from PS3 and Xbox 360 to the next-gen PS4 and Xbox One.

2. NBA Live 2014 -- The once-dominant game series took some years off and tried to re-enter the market this year. However, the game totally flopped and the graphics were terrible; clearly it was a questionable decision to re-introduce a game at a time when 2K Sports has enjoyed huge success with its basketball game.

3. Madden 2014 -- Despite the rampant marketing efforts to label the game with some sort of 25-year anniversary tag, Madden was fairly medioce this year. There really were not any notable improvements to the game and the Madden series continues to look less and less like a refreshing annual release and more like an annual roster update with the same game.

4. FIFA World Cup Brazil -- Of course, the special title is aptly named for the upcoming World Cup, which is just months away. This game is expected to do extremely well, especially considering that its release will be perfectly lined up with the World Cup.

5. NHL 14 -- IGN gave this game an 8.3 rating out of 10, which sounds fine until you realize that the game never came out on the next-gen consoles. One has to wonder why the game never saw the light of day on Xbox One or PS4 considering that it was an anticipated release.

What do you think about the sports video games so far this year? Do you think the baseball games will impress or will they disappoint? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
