Seven years after the release of "300," film-goers flocked to the theaters over the weekend to watch the sequel, "300: Rise of the Empire."

Forbes reports that while Zack Snyder's "300" was groundbreaking and in its wake, the highly-anticipated 2nd installment is off to a good start after it raked in $46 million during its opening weekend domestically and has earned an additional $ 87 million overseas making its total a great $132 million total.

Its only new release competition was Fox-DreamWorks Animation, "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," based on the 1960s cartoon which earned $32.5 million. The time-travel adventure is up against holdover "The Lego Movie," that brought $8 million Friday and $32 million-plus weekend. Also, fresh from its Oscar win, "Frozen" is also still in theaters, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Peabody cost $145 million to make and has so far earned $ 40 million in select theaters overseas where it was released early.

This follow up, Rise of the Empire, has garnered quite the following over social media and already has 10s of millions of YouTube views that speaks highly of the anticipation which has been building since last summer following the release of the first trailer, says Variety.

While the Rise of an Empire will have to settle for second as it won't match the record-breaking $70.9 million domestic debut of the first 300 during the same weekend in 2007, it has held its own.

Warners and Legendary co-financed the $110 million sequel that's also doing well internationally is directed by Noam Murro and stars Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green. Producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton reteamed to make Rise of an Empire alongside Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Bernie Goldmann, recalls the Hollywood Reporter.
