Wednesday’s chance to make big money playing Powerball is here. The grand prize is currently at $70 million, with a cash value of $43.6 million.

Last Wednesday’s winning numbers were 12, 27, 29, 43, 68 and 1. There were 452,986 regular winners, and $4,088,091 in non-jackpot money was won.

There are actually nine ways to play Powerball. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 293 million, but the odds of simply doubling your money on a $2 ticket are 1 in 38.

In happy lottery news, a fellow from Bosie, Idaho named Brandon Wirz just won $150,000 thanks to the kindness of his wife and her birthday surprise. As the Idaho Statesman reports, Dawn Wirz placed a Mega Millions tickets and a Powerball ticket into her husband’s birthday card. The lucky man came into $1 with the Mega Millions game and $150,000 from the Powerball ticket.

Thanks to a PowerPlay multiplier of three, Brandon was actually able to triple his initial prize of $50,000.

“It was an unbelievable birthday!” said Wirz, who plans to pay off bills with his new money, then add to a college fund for his son and just save the rest.

The Wirz family are not the only Powerball winners out there.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that in St. Peters, Missouri, a $1 million Powerball prize will be split three ways between Erik Kneebone, Farah Shaddix, and Justin Shaddix, each getting about $333,333 before taxes.

Taxes on lottery prizes are actually a pretty serious part of the game. As CNN reports, the government requires the lottery to notify them of all prizes over $600 and will automatically withhold 25 percent on any prizes over $5,000.

Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, is an exception, and Powerball winners there will not typically owe the IRS anything because they are generally exempt from paying federal income tax.
