A new zombie film franchise is on the rise with its roots in Jeff McComsey's graphic novel "Z-Men."

According to Deadline, the new project has been green-lit by Lionsgate and the production for the film will be a partnership with comic book publisher Double Take and Take-Two Interactive Software.

The newest addition to the zombie film universe will be all about the government squaring off with the zombie outbreak. It will focus heavily on its attempts to control and in some way prevent the masses from getting infected. But as most fans already know, when it comes to zombies, eradication is rarely achieved.

Double Take uses the title as their flagship, which is a universe they've created around the "Night of the Living Dead" franchise.

Although most of the zombie craze lately has been relegated to the television audiences with shows like "The Walking Dead," "iZombie" and "Z-Nation," there has been some success in the film industry as well.

One of the most recent success in the zombie film industry was 2009's "Zombieland'," which was mainly billed as a comedy, but nevertheless a gore-filled movie with equally horrifying themes.

"Shaun of the Dead" is another example, but again, it was mainly a comedy with good old-fashioned zombie gore.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger announced the deal in a statement.

"We're delighted to expand our relationship with our friends at Take-Two by partnering with their comic book arm, Double Take, in bringing 'Z-Men' to the big screen," the statement read.

"We continue to diversify our portfolio with films adapted from novels, video games and board games and look forward to translating 2T's graphic novel into a spine-chilling film for moviegoers and comic book fans alike."

Take-Two has recently converted one of their own video games, "Borderlands," into a movie as well.

Although the film project is definitely moving forward, there has been no word yet as to when production will start or when the film will be released.
