Brace yourself, Sherlock fans; BBC has announced that the new season of Sherlock will be coming in 2016.

It has been two years since viewers were shocked by the surprising ending of Season 2 of Sherlock. With an amazing following after its first three seasons, the show will bring more exciting story lines to television viewers everywhere in the new season. Sherlock Season 3 received very high TV ratings and became the U.K.'s most watched crime drama series since 2001. The writing duo who is responsible for the success of the series are putting their heads together to give viewers an even more thrilling and action packed new season.

First shown on British television, the crime drama series Sherlock has now been aired in more than 200 countries. The series is a modern version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories about the ingenious Sherlock Holmes. The show was created by screenwriters Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Sherlock Holmes while Martin Freeman plays Dr. John Watson. The two screenwriters have hinted that the female stars of the show will play a larger role, which includes Una Stubbs (Mrs. Hudson) and Brealey (Molly Hooper). The new season may also have a few new female characters

The first season debuted in 2010 and contained four episodes. That was followed by Season 2 in 2012. Sherlock fans eagerly waited for its return, which took another two years before Season 3 was released. The series had three episodes with a 90 minute premiere episode named "The Empty Hearse." The other episode titles are "The Sign of Three" (episode 2) and "His Last Vow" (episode 3). It seems the two-year wait has become the norm for new seasons of Sherlock.

No specific details have been divulged by Gatiss and Moffat other than implying that the new season of Sherlock will feature Moriarty.
