A gaming website has become the subject of Internet memes and ridicule after they mistakenly previewed an older game they thought to be Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

"Uncharted 4 is the first PS4 entry in a series that has traditionally pushed boundaries," read the preview by website VG247, via Kotaku. "Why does it feel so familiar?"

The game felt familiar because it is six years old. A writer from VG247 attended the Tokyo Game Show, expecting to preview Naughty Dog's upcoming 2016 title Uncharted 4. What he actually played was the updated PS4 edition of 2009's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, part of the recently released Nathan Drake Collection.

Unaware of his mishap, the website published the writer's less than enthusiastic preview, which criticized the game as "formulaic."

"But graphics don't make the game, and even if Uncharted 4 is the most beautiful thing ever to have happened in the history of video games, it's not -- it's not new," the article read.

"This is a complaint that has been leveled a lot this generation, I think, that games are just shinier rather than more interesting, and Uncharted may be in for the same critique. Where the first Uncharted games felt like they were blowing the bar sky high, this one just felt like more of the same."

On realizing their blunder, VG247 issued a public apology.

"As soon as Sony notified us of our mistake we immediately unpublished the article as it was clearly based on one massive error on our part. TGS is busy and obviously the majority of signage isn't in English, but none of that excuses the fact that we seriously f*cked up," wrote website editor Matt Martin.

Social media had a field day at the website's expense, with Twitter spawning the new trend, #WriteAVG247Review.

Even Uncharted director Neil Druckmann got in on the fun.
