Nexus 5X: Latest Phone From Google Features USB Type C, Fingerprint Sensor and More
Two updated Google Nexus devices are coming this year. The smaller of the two smartphones, the Nexus 5X, is available as of Monday.
Google introduced two new Nexus smartphones for 2015, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P. The Nexus 5X features a 5.2-inch screen and is made by LG, Tech Radar reports.
The Nexus 5X is built for people who prefer a smaller phone that will fit in one hand, instead of two, like larger phones. The Nexus 5X also comes with a small price tag, just $379 for the unlocked handset.
A new feature that is coming to many smartphones including the Nexus 5X is the USB Type C port. USB Type C allows cables to be inserted in any direction. USB Type C is also a faster technology that provides quicker charging.
The fingerprint sensor below the camera on the back of the Nexus 5X allows the user to quickly unlock their phone, bypass typing in passwords or authorize mobile payments. Google says their fingerprint sensor is faster than the Apple iPhone's fingerprint sensor. Watch this video to see the two sensors compared:
The Nexus 5X is nice and light at 136 grams. The dimensions of the phone are 147 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm. These dimensions are taller and broader than the Nexus 5 from two years ago, but the phone is skinnier. The shape and size of the phone provide one-handed operation but still offer a nice stretched screen for easy viewing.
On the rear of the Nexus 5X is the 12.3 megapixel camera. In early photo leaks of the Nexus 5X, it looked like this camera would stick out of the phone, but it ended up being just a minor protrusion from the handset. The camera performs well in lowlight situations.
As far as construction, the Nexus 5X is made of a polycarbonate back and a thin metal frame. Instead of all plastic, glass or metal, the Nexus 5X chose something in between. This actually makes the Nexus 5X feel similar to the Nexus 5's plastic back.
The Nexus 5X will come pre-installed with Google's Android 6.0 Marshallow.
