Healthcare Company Publishes Racist Job Ad in Newspaper, Says 'No Haitians' Need Apply
A Florida-based healthcare company is under fire after posting a racist help wanted advertisement in a local New York newspaper that stated "no Haitians" need apply.
The controversial Interim HealthCare Inc. ad was published in an Oct. 15 edition of the Rockland County Pennysaver for a female nursing position in the hamlet of West Haverstraw, reports The New York Daily News.
"Laid back nurse, no haitians, must have strong respiratory mngt," it reads.
However, New York State Sen. David Carlucci took note of the discriminatory ad published in his district of Rockland County, which has one of the highest Haitian population in the country.
"The ad placed is a blatant form of discrimination that cannot be tolerated in our community or in our state," Carlucci said, according to ABC 7.
"This is outrageous discrimination in its purest form. It is a direct violation of the Civil Rights act and is completely illegal!" added the Democratic official. "This company should be ashamed of itself, and Pennysaver should strongly reconsider running any job postings from Interim HealthCare in future publications."
The Rockland County Human Rights Commission is slated to launch an investigation to look into the ad, according to the Pelham Daily Voice.
Following the backlash, Interim Healthcare Inc., which is one of the oldest and best-known medical staffing companies in America, called the ad "totally unacceptable." They also announced that they have launched their own investigation.
Meanwhile, the Pennysaver Group also issued an apology in a statement.
"We deeply apologize to our readers and the Haitian community for the ad that appeared in the 10/15 issue of the Rockland Pennysaver. The ad was mistakenly published without proper editing protocol. We recognize the wording was highly offensive to our readers, executives as well as the employees of The Pennysaver and by no means does it reflect the opinions or feelings of the company," reads the statement, according to CNBC.
