Titanfall Release and Gameplay: Does Xbox One's Biggest Game Live Up to the Hype?
The reviews are in and Titanfall is being lauded as a solid game. It's not a disappointment, nor is it as enrapturing as previous Xbox tentpoles such as Halo 4.
So what is Titanfall and who created it? The guys behind the bestselling Call of Duty franchise got together and decided to make a huge, multiplayer only game. They founded a new game studio balls Respawn Entertainment and got to work on Titanfall immediately. The fruits of their labor resulted in a game that combines the competitive nature of Call of Duty multiplayer with the open world destruction older gamers will recall MechWarrior having.
Popular game review site IGN thinks that the game "earns a seat at the table with the genre's entrenched powerhouses." Yet IGN criticized the game's lack of polish. They went as far as saying that Titanfall is "somewhat regrettably a barebones game in terms of modes and customization features." Gamespot's review is more positive saying that the game is "both a continual pleasure and a constant challenge."
Titanfall has only been out for two days now. Prior to its Tuesday, March 11 release it was available to play as a beta. As with any new hotly anticipated title gamers have snapped up their copies in order to be among the first to play. That's been welcome news for the much maligned Xbox One. Microsoft's latest console is lagging behind the PS4 both in terms of sales and power.
Despite the positive press those very gamers are starting to get very, very angry. Does the game actually suck? No, not at all. They just haven't been able to play the game at all. Server issues have been plaguing the title since it's launch on Tuesday. Since the game is online-only gamers had to log onto a server to play. Yet, the server's were inaccessible for a time. A patch was deployed that addressed the issue, but with more and more people buying the game more problems seems to be on the horizon.
Also, the game doesn't look as pretty as some expected. In fact the game runs at a resolution just a notch above 720p and even then the game cannot sustain the desirable 60fps due to the Xbox One's weak graphics hardware.
Despite these issues Titanfall looks to be an enjoyable first-person shooter.
