Apple iPhone 6s vs. Google Nexus 5X: Cameras, Other Features Improve
Apple and Google both updated their own smartphones this fall. Buyers looking for the latest phone can choose between the Apple iPhone 6s or the Google Nexus 5X.
The Nexus 5X is a little bigger than the iPhone 6s, according to Mac World, but it is also lighter. Comparing the features of the two phones can help buyers make a decision.
Looking first at the two chips offered from the smartphones, the iPhone 6s wins even though the A9 processor is just two cores compared to the Nexus 5X's six core Snapdragon 808 processor. The A9 is clocked in at 1.84 GHz, while the Snapdragon 808 runs at 1.44 GHz on four cores and 1.82 GHz on two cores.
Both phones have 2 GB of RAM. This is only important for the iPhone 6s, since all previous iPhones have been stuck on 1 GB of RAM. Since the A9 manages its apps better than the Snapdragon 808, the iPhone 6s performs faster and more efficient than the Nexus 5X.
The Nexus 5X offers a bigger battery than the iPhone 6s and Google wanted to make sure that people knew that it also has fast-charging capabilities. The 2,700 mAh battery in the Nexus 5X is much larger than the 1,715 mAh battery found in the iPhone 6s, so the Nexus 5X should last longer. The iPhone 6s should be able to edge out an extra hour of battery life through the Low Power Mode built into iOS 9. But head-to-head the Nexus 5X will last longer, and when it needs to be recharged, it will charge faster.
Both phones got significant camera upgrades. Previous iPhones have been stuck at 8 megapixels (MP) for years. Finally, with the iPhone 6s, Apple upgraded to a 12 MP camera. The Nexus line of phones have been known to have poor cameras, but Google fixed that with a 12.3 MP camera in the Nexus 5X. Both of these phones will finally deliver excellent pictures for the first time. The iPhone 6s has special extra features like Live Photos, but the quality of the photos taken by the Nexus 5X is better.
The major difference in these two smartphones is price, the Nexus 5X is affordable and the iPhone 6s will be a significant cost. The Nexus 5X will start off at $379 for the 16 GB version and go up to $429 for the 32 GB version. The iPhone 6s starts off at $649 for the 16 GB version, and there is no 32 GB version meaning stepping up to the 64 GB version for $749.
With better battery life and fast charging, the Nexus 5X is the better value. The two phones operate on two different operating systems, but the iPhone 6s will be faster. However, faster is not worth the extra $270.
