Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed new details about the upcoming Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film "The Revenant."

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Movies the actor stated that he was aware that the film would be a risky shoot and that he knew it would be tough. He said, "The truth is that I knew what I was getting into. This was a film that had been floating around for quite some time, but nobody was crazy enough to really take this on, simply because of the logistics of where we needed to shoot and the amount of work and rehearsal that would have to be done to achieve Alejandro and [cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki] vision."

DiCaprio also praised the director Inarritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubeski for their dedication and working habits. He said, "They're very specific about their shots and what they want to achieve, and that -- compounded with the fact that we were in an all-natural environment, succumbing to whatever nature gave us -- was something that became more of a profoundly intense chapter of our lives than we ever thought it was going to be."

For months "The Revenant" has been in the public eye for its harsh production and for going over budget. The film was originally budgeted at $90 million but due to delays in production and many crew members leaving in the midst of production, the budget has steadily climbed to over $135 million. Twentieth Century Fox estimates that by the time the film is completed it will have a hefty budget of over $165 million.

Additionally, "The Revenant's" schedule also caused Tom Hardy to abandon "Suicide Squad," which he had originally signed on to be part of.

"The Revenant" is currently in post-production and based on word of mouth and the trailers the film is looking to be a big Oscar Contender. Many speculate that DiCaprio will finally take home his Oscar after being nominated four times. DiCaprio was previously nominated for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Blood Diamond," "The Aviator" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

Inarritu is one of the most acclaimed directors in cinema and he has directed a number of Oscar-nominated films including "Birdman," "Babel," "Biutiful," "21 Grams" and "Amores Perros."

"The Revenant" is slated for release on Dec. 25 with an expansion scheduled for January.
