Texas Cuts Planned Parenthood's Government Funding
Texas health officials announced Monday that it was cutting off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood clinics in response to controversial videos of officials discussing aborted fetal tissue.
Planned Parenthood has been under fire since July when an anti-abortion group released videos that allegedly show medical workers affiliated with the pro-choice nonprofit discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue. The women's health organization has denied any wrongdoing and pointed out that the videos are heavily edited.
Nonetheless, Texas Gov. Greg Abbot told Fox News that the state is cutting the organization's funding due to allegations that Planned Parenthood violated several state and federal laws, which include altering the abortion procedure in order to obtain fetal tissue, Medicaid fraud and operating in unsanitary conditions.
In a letter addressed to Planned Parenthood affiliates throughout the state, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission's Office of Inspector General state officials stated that their enrollment in the joint state-federal Medicaid program was in the process of being terminated because they were potentially "liable, directly or by affiliation, for a series of serious Medicaid program violations," reports USA Today.
"Your termination and that of all your affiliates will not affect access to care in this state because there are thousands of alternate providers in Texas, including federally qualified health centers, Medicaid-certified rural health clinics, and other health care providers across the state that participate in the Texas Women's Health Program and Medicaid," reads the letter said.
In response, Planned Parenthood workers slammed the state for deciding to cut off its funding, which they argue will disproportionately hurt low-income women.
"Once again, politicians in Austin are showing how little they care about Texans' health care. Planned Parenthood will continue to fight for access to health care and information for all Texans," said Yvonne Gutierrez, executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, in a statement
