Chris Rock To Host 88th Oscars Award? 'Top Five' Star To Come Back After Controversial 2005 Oscars Hosting Gig
Veteran comedian and actor Chris Rock is in talks of coming back for another hosting stint at the 88th Oscar Awards on February, but the "Everybody Hates Chris" star is yet to seal the deal.
According to a Variety report, the announcement will come shortly, and should Rock win the bid, it will be his second time to host the event after his critically acclaimed yet controversial hosting gig during the 77th Oscars in 2005. However, to date, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not released an official statement regarding Rock's come back.
Rock's inclusion in the list of hosts came after he hit the headlines as he spoke unfazed about issues like Bill Cosby allegations and the Ferguson mayhem during his "Top Five" press tour. According to Time, the Oscars need that kind of attention in order to recuperate from the dismal ratings that the ceremony earned this year as hosted by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris. With a 16 percent dip from last year's ratings, the show had hit rock bottom -- the lowest in the last six years.
Entertainment Weekly adds that should Rock get the job, he can possibly share the stage with another host. "We have absolutely talked about duos. We've talked about a lot of different configurations," Oscars co-producer Reginald Hudlin told the publication. "I love that David [my co-producer] is a flamethrower, and I'm always way more secretive and tight-lipped. But we're still very much in the brainstorming phase."
While his last on-stage Academy Award performance in 2005 has been thumbs-upped by many critics, Rock had blown a few gaskets as he cracked a joke about Jude Law appearing in so many shows and filmmakers rushing to make movies, ending up wit "second-rate" talents, as what he had implied, per Today.
"You want Tom Cruise and all you can get is Jude Law? Wait. You want Russell Crowe and all you can get is Colin Farrell? Wait. 'Alexander' is not 'Gladiator."' Rock quipped. "You want Denzel (Washington) and all you can get is me? Wait, Denzel's a fine actor. He woulda never made 'Pootie Tang."'
Sean Penn fired back as he took the stage to present the best actress award and defended Law against the comedian's comparison, saying that Law is "one of our finest actors."
But despite his tad bit controversial 2005 stint, Rock still seemed to be interested with the job as he told TheWrap in 2014 that he would definitely take it if he had been given the offer after being rumored to do Harris' job last February.
"Oh, yeah," he said. "If they asked me, yeah, I'd definitely do it again. Definitely, definitely."
