Trevor Noah Targets the Racist ‘Star Wars’ Movement on Social Media [Watch]
Trevor Noah tackled the racist "Star Wars" movement on social media in his usual comedic fashion Tuesday night.
After all the hype over the new "Star Wars" trailer that debuted Monday night during an NFL game, the trailer had a black cloud cast over it when people started taking to social media to boycott the film due to its lack of white actors.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Twitter hashtag #BoycottStarWarsVII started trending when people voiced their outrage that there was a black stormtropper and very few white actors in other roles.
Noah featured this on "The Daily Show" which included news reports on the issue. After a quick laugh about the trending topic, he made some witty comments that underscored the movement.
"Stop complaining, racists, you already had your 'Star Wars' movie," Noah said accompanied by an over the shoulder graphic of Jar Jar Binks, a character that fans of the saga loved to hate.
Those who were tweeting with the hashtag were making outrageous claims, like the film is trying to promote a "sinister multicultural agenda," which gave Noah some of the best chow for his next material on the show.
But, as Variety pointed out, that quickly segued into Noah's commentary that John Boyega was hardly the first black person to receive backlash for playing a historically white role.
When the most recent incarnation of "The Fantastic Four" premiered, there were people on social media deriding the producer's choice to cast Michael B. Jordan in the role of the Human Torch. Such was also the case when Amandla Stenberg was cast in "The Hunger Games" film as the character of Rue.
The segment also featured Noah tuning in with correspondent and self-proclaimed nerd Jordan Klepper about the film in what appeared to be an old video store location.
Take a look at the video below to see the comical exchange.
