The critically acclaimed The Last Of Us video game has been green-light for a movie. Everyone should be excited, but both movie lovers and gamers are skeptical.

The movie studio, Screen Gems announced on Thursday its plans to distribute a new film The Last Of Us based on the video game of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog. Even better news is that the creative director for the game, Neil Druckmann will write the script for the video-game-turned-film adaptation; and Druckmann, as well as Game director Bruce Straley will produce the film, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Sam Raimi under his Ghost House Pictures will also be involved in the project.

This sounds exciting already right? Well, Hollywood has not produced a worthy or notable video-game-turned-film adaptation in years; think about Super Mario Brothers in 1993, Mortal Kombat in 1995, and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D in 2012, just to name a few.

But there is hope, CinemaBlend.com reports. There is Assassins Creed, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and the most recent Need for Speed, that could get both movie and gaming audiences revved up.

The Last Of Us looks like an in-depth interactive movie experience, Forbes reported.

The story takes place in an apocalyptic U.S. in 2033, 20 years after the outbreak of a deadly virus/fungus. Joel has been tasked to escort and guard Ellie, 14, a young girl who is perhaps the key to curing the virus/fungus. Together they travel across the devastated landscape in search of Fireflies, a resistance group. Along the way, they must battle criminals, cannibals, and the infected people who have turned into zombies.

The video game which only came out last summer, has won numerous awards. It won 10 prizes at this year's Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences D.I.C.E. Awards; it was named game of the year, as well as for outstanding innovation in gaming and character performance. And it won a Writers Guild of America award for outstanding achievement in writing for video games, just to name a few.

Although some movie and gaming enthusiasts are skeptical about the venture, the voice over actor for the role of Joel, Troy Baker could not be happier.

"From experience I trust implicitly everyone at Naughty Dog, from Christophe to Evan to Straley to Druckmann. To everyone who liked the game, you need to trust them," Baker said in an interview with IGN.

Druckmann and Straley cites their inspiration for the video game, from No Country for Old Men; for the game's music they enlisted Oscar-winner Gustavo Santaolalla from Brokeback Mountain.

Druckmann and Straley are talented and exceptional people, let's hope that it will translate into a remarkable video-game-turned-film adaptation blockbuster.
