‘Super Troopers 2’ News: Production Begins After Successful Kickstarter
A successful crowd-funding campaign has kick-started the production of "Super Troopers 2," a sequel to the popular spoof comedy released back in 2001 at the Sundance Film Festival.
According to Variety, production on the new film has already started, and the old troupe of actors are all back in their glorious former roles as Vermont State Troopers.
The group hails from the comedy organization know as "Broken Lizard," which has had a mildly successful run in the film arena. The original "Super Troopers" film was made on a $1.2 million budget and brought in $20 million for the group.
The new film was supported by a crowd-funding campaign that raised $4.4 million for the film, about 77 percent of the original $5.7 million goal set out for the drive.
Contributors to the campaign were lured in by special incentives. Rewards for charitable fans included a producer credit for $10,000, a speaking role on the film for $10,000, a ballpark trip with the original actors for $15,000, and, for a grand prize, the patrol car the cast will use in the film for a $35,000 contribution.
Although there have been no details about the sequel plot yet, fans of the original movie may remember that the troopers were eccentric jokesters, balancing official duties with pranks on one another that often went too far.
As Vermont State Troopers, they were stationed close to the Canadian border, and they were always bored. They were also in competition with the local police for making high profile arrests, leading to a comedic rivalry between the two police forces.
The new film will reunite all the original actors, including Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.
There has been no word yet on when the film will be released.
