First there was the ZenFone series from 2014 followed by this year's ZenFone 2 family. Now, Asus has revealed further details regarding ZenFone 3, the company's next-gen lineup of mobile devices.

Asus boss Jonney Shih confirmed the ZenFone 3 branding during a recent interview with Trusted Reviews. He also mentioned that the handsets included in the series will be equipped with USB-Type C connectors.

"I think Type C is the way to go, frankly speaking," said Shih. "You will see the answer when you see the ZenFone 3."

When asked why the new port wasn't fitted on this year's ZenFone 2, Shih explained that Asus prioritizes cost and value. The company did not want to jeopardize the quality of Zenfone 2 mobile devices by rushing to add USB-Type C connectors at the last minute.

"I think it's more a timing issue, frankly speaking. Yeah, what's the right timing? We normally want to be a little bit ahead. But if you're too much ahead, then sometimes it may be a disaster, right? So that's our strategy. We're still not like Apple. [Apple] can always try to lead in a very aggressive way," added the Asus CEO.

Shih concluded by saying that Asus wants to be more aggressive in its mobile manufacturing campaign, but a bit of practicality is sometimes needed.

Similar to the current-gen ZenFone 2 family, the ZenFone 3 lineup will most likely feature top-tier, mid-range and budget smartphones. Although there's no word on when the next-gen devices will be announced, at least we now know that they will come with brand-new USB Type-C connectors.

Apple was one of the first tech manufacturers to utilize USB Type-C. The port was featured on the 12-inch MacBook, which released in early 2015. Google has since used the technology on the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P. Mobile upstart OnePlus also fitted its OnePlus 2 smartphone with USB Type-C.

Some of the perks of having USB Type-C on mobile devices is that it's reversible and durable. The new port eliminates the inconvenience of plugging USB drives and cables the wrong way. A Type-C plug can be hooked in either way to a Type-C connector. The reversibility even works on USB 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0.

According to Phone Arena, USB Type-C is made to withstand over 10,000 insertion/extraction cycles, on par with the latest Micro-USB connectors. Also, the new port takes up little space on a circuit board, giving hardware developers more wiggle room to add extra features inside a mobile device.
