Anderson Silva Return: Will Michael Bisping Agree To Face 'Spider' Next Year?
Michael Bisping has expressed interest in facing former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Anderson Silva numerous times before, but it appears the British mixed martial artist does not want the showdown to happen anymore.
Bisping, who holds a 27-7 MMA record, said during an interview with MMA Junkie Radio that he is not interested in colliding with Silva anymore after the former UFC middleweight kingpin tested positive for anabolic steroids during his UFC 183 showdown with Nick Diaz.
"I've always wanted to fight Anderson Silva," Bisping said. "Everybody knows that. That's been well documented. But, I don't know if I feel the same about that right now. The fact is, I kind of said to myself recently, 'Anybody that tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs, I want no part of it.' As far as I'm concerned, you've been a cheat."
Silva tested positive for drostanolone and androstane during a drug test on Jan. 9 and was also failed another examination following his Jan. 31 showdown with Diaz after traces of drostanolone were found in his samples again along with anti-anxiety medication.
Silva has denied numerous times that he took the banned substances intentionally, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission found enough reason to slap a one-year ban and $380,000 fine. The 40-year-old MMA superstar will not be allowed to fight until January next year.
The Brazilian has maintained that he is not planning to retire because he still has a lot to prove inside the UFC Octagon. But even if Bisping will be picked to face Silva, the 36-year-old said that he will not accept the fight against "Spider" because he does not want to face a fighter who was caught cheating.
"I think he must have been on the juice the whole time," Bisping said. "I've never used any of that stuff, and I don't see why I should have to fight people who have used those products. So, I don't know whether I would take a fight with Anderson Silva after that's all said and done."
Bisping was originally scheduled to face Robert Whittaker at UFC 193 on Nov. 15 in Australia, but he had to pull out of the fight after undergoing surgery on his arm. The Briton said that he has yet to work out in the gym, but he is recovering well from the surgery.
