Billboard's Women in Music 2015: Selena Gomez to Be Saluted as Chart Topper
Selena Gomez is slated to be feted with an award as Billboard's Chart Topper at the magazine's annual Women in Music extravaganza in New York in early December.
When it comes to the Billboard charts, the last two years have been quite an exciting time for Gomez.
Her latest album "Revival" debuted at No. 1 atop the top 200 and netted 117,000 units in its first week. Coming on the heels of her 2013 hit "Stars Dance," the album was her second best seller and moved the needle of her worldwide album sales up to 6.7 million, with over 22 million single sales.
The first single from her latest production "Good For You," which features A$AP Rocky, is her fastest-ever platinum seller and her highest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 5.
"In the last few months, Selena has broken onto the scene as an adult, and come into her own as an artist with the success of 'Revival,'" said Janice Min, co-president and chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media's Entertainment Group, which consists of Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. "We want to highlight this moment for a woman who has become a role model for many, a feminist, an independent voice whose new album truly showcases her as a mature artist."
In addition, Lady Gaga will also be honored at the event as the 2015 Woman of the Year, succeeding last year's victor Taylor Swift. The "Born This Way" artist is to be saluted for her "industry leadership, artistry, philanthropy, innovative contribution to music and inspiration to millions."
Over the coming weeks, Billboard is expected to announce other celebrities and performers for the event, which will be presented in partnership with Lifetime on Dec. 18.
