Miles College Student Shot, Killed Near Alabama Campus
A suspect has been brought into custody following the fatal shooting of a student at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama, on Tuesday night.
Police say that the shooting took place around 10 p.m. at the historically black college, which was founded in 1898, reports AL.com. The victim, who was identified as 21-year-old Keenen Tajae Morris of Mobile, was shot when gunfire erupted inside of his apartment at the Lloyd Nolan Apartments on the campus proper of Miles College. School officials say that the off-campus housing complex is also known as the North Campus area. Tajae was then pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m.
A school administrator confirmed that one suspect is in custody, reports ABC 33/40. Meanwhile, Fairfield Police are still investigating the shooting. Officials, however, believe this was an isolated incident rather than a random act.
Following the shooting, ABC station WBRC received phone calls and reports on social media saying that an alert was not sent out to students. However, Miles College President George French said the school sent an alert to the student body.
Miles College spokeswoman Alicia Johnson also confirmed that officials asked "students to stay in their rooms and exercise precautionary measures,'' she said. She added that exactly where and a motive behind the shooting have yet to be confirmed. "We have heard two or three different stories. We're still waiting to get more information from police this morning."
Earlier this month, a random school shooting occurred when a gunman opened fire at the Umpqua Community College in Douglas County, killing nine people and wounding seven others. The shooter, who was later identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, then committed suicide. Some witnesses say that Mercer was specifically targeting Christians in his attack.
