Seattle Helicopter Crash: News Chopper Crash Kills At Least Two, Injures One Near Space Needle
A well-known tourist destination in Seattle turned into a deadly crash site on Tuesday after a news helicopter crashed by the Space Needle, killing at least two people.
The helicopter, which represented KOMO, an ABC affiliate in the area, crashed and set nearby cars on fire. According to Reuters, a 37-year-old person was able to escape one of the cars and was promptly transported to a hospital. No other injuries have been reported yet.
"The helicopter had some kind of problem taking off," Taylor Van Cise of KOMO-FM radio said, according to the LA Times. "There is the smell of jet fuel. There are fire trucks, police cars and motorcycles all over."
"We can see where the helicopter went down," he added. "We can see the tail of the helicopter in an SUV. It's a pretty dramatic scene."
One woman, who was not named, was quoted by the LA Times as calling the event "incredibly surreal."
"I headed to the window and saw a huge fireball," she said. "I saw someone emerge from a vehicle clearly on fire."
A number of photos of the aftermath were posted on social media accounts. The Seattle Fire Department posted photos of the scene, showing burned cars and smoke still emerging from the wreckage.
Once the rescue vehicles arrived, the crash site was blocked off with yellow police tape, according to reports. The incident occurred around rush hour, and as previously mentioned, right near the Space Needle area where there are several museums for children.
More information about the cause of the crash will likely emerge in the coming hours and days. What exactly caused the problems during takeoff is yet to be known.
