Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake will be lost to the Miami Dolphins for the rest of the season, after he suffered a torn Achilles during the team's 36-7 Thursday night loss to Tom Brady and the undefeated New England Patriots.

The veteran defender was carted off the field during the third quarter of the blowout loss. Later he briefly addressed the media on crutches, sporting a heavy wrap around his left foot.

"We'll get with the doctors and take it from there," ESPN reports a despondent Wake repeated on several occasions. Wake was rushing Brady when he came up lame, remaining on the turf for several minutes before being helped to the sidelines and eventually the locker room.

Before going down, Wake registered his seventh sack over the last three games, taking down Brady before halftime.

"I would feel horrible, and I know his teammates would, too, if that's the case," Dolphins coach Dan Campbell said after the game of the possibility of losing Wake for the rest of the season. "If you lost a guy like Cam, it would hurt. Not only is he a leader, but he's a very productive player."

A four-time Pro Bowler over the last five seasons, the 33-year-old Wake has been one of the Dolphins' few bright spots in a season, which has already forced the team to fire coach Joe Philbin before reaching the midway point in the season.

The Dolphins signed Wake in 2009 out of the Canadian Football League. Since joining the franchise, he has amassed 69 sacks among his 208 tackles over the last seven seasons.

"He's the heart and soul," veteran safety Michael Thomas said of Wake. "He makes big plays. He brings energy. He's getting sacks. He means everything to this defense."
