‘Bad Santa 2’ Gets the Green Light
The original dark-comedy Christmas movie "Bad Santa" is finally getting a sequel made, which is expected to take on the same gritty themes as the original with familiar faces.
According to Deadline, "Bad Santa 2" is set for production and will bring back the original star Billy Bob Thornton to reprise his role as one of the two-part duo that held Christmas capers on the holidays going in under disguise as Santa and his little elf.
The original starred Thornton and Tony Cox as the faux duo who ushered their way into department stores as the caper duo by impersonating a "Santa and his helper team" that the company would come to trust, emphatically.
After several scores each year and taking the rest of the year off with their loot, they returned for one more score that was supposed to allow them to retire. But when a meddling kid got involved and Thornton's Bad Santa character eventually ended up moving into the neglected kid's home, the caper went sideways and it appeared as if the boy turned his heart into something better, sort of like a "Grinch" style of story.
There has been no word yet on what the plot details or character roles will be in the next movie, but Thornton is expected to return and the new film will put a new twist into the dark holiday story.
Broad Green Pictures CEO Gabriel Hammond and CCO Daniel Hammond released a statement on the project and seemed enthused to bring it back.
"'Bad Santa' has been a part of our family holiday tradition ever since we all saw it together at our neighborhood theater," the statement read. "We are excited to bring this memorable character and new chapter back to the big screen."
Production on the film will begin in January of 2016. There has been no word yet on when the film will be released, although it might be safe to bet that it will be sometime around next year's holiday season.
