Despite his tough immigration stance, a prominent Hispanic rights advocate has offered support for some aspects of 2016 Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz's immigration policy.

On Friday, Daniel Garza, the executive director of the conservative Latino group Libre Initiative, commended the Texas senator for pushing to expand legal immigration by issuing more green cards and student visas.

"He believes strongly in legal immigration," Garza said on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal," according to The Washington Times. "Ted has also proposed to quadruple the number of student visas, so that it is more market driven. So he gets it about legal immigration."

However, Garza added that the Tea Party favorite needs to step up his policies when it comes to dealing with the millions of undocumented immigrants currently living on U.S. soil.

"Where we want to work with the senator a little more is what do we do with the 11 million that are here. We want to encourage him to be more accommodating to those folks," he said.

Prior to the third Republican presidential debate on Wednesday, a coalition of Latino conservative groups and activists delivered a stern message to the Republican 2016 hopefuls, warning them to not engage in inflammatory anti-immigration rhetoric. The Latino leaders also blasted Donald Trump -- who has infamously called Mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers -- as an unelectable candidate who cannot win over the Hispanic voters needed to win in swing states, reports Time.

Other Hispanic leaders made note of Cruz's record on immigration reform as well as his support behind Trump on the campaign trail.

According to them, Cruz should not support Trump's call to eliminate the 14th Amendment, which would end the law that gives citizenship to every child born in the U.S.

The leaders added that Cruz, who is the son of a Latino immigrant, needs to clearly outline his policy on immigration in order to recruit conservative Latino voters.
