Kate Winslet Bans Her Children From Social Media
Kate Winslet has banned her children from using social media.
The 40-year-old actress has limited her family's access to social media, along with the amount of time they spend with phones and tablets, according to the Sunday Times.
"It has a huge impact on young women's self-esteem, because all they ever do is design themselves for people to like them," Winslet said. "And what comes along with that? Eating disorders. And that makes my blood boil. And is the reason we don't have any social media in our house."
Winslet is the mother of daughter Mia, 15, and sons Joe, 11 and Bear, 22 months. Both she and husband Ned Rocknroll enforce a strict policy of limited technology and try to encourage their children to participate in other activities, such as playing outside.
"Let your kids climb trees. Take the device out of their hand. Play Monopoly," Winslet said. "You go to a cafe and grown-ups are at one end of the table and children the other, on devices, not looking up."
The actress believes these devices are undermining the family structure. Despite her strong opinions on the issue, she claimed she didn't want people to think she's completely anti-digital.
Meanwhile, Winslet last popped up in headlines in September when she discussed her past marriages with The Wall Street Journal. She discussed her marriages to "Extraordinary Rendition" director Jim Threapleton from 1998 to 2001 and to "American Beauty" director Sam Mendes from 2003 to 2011.
"I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it's just those are the cards that life dealt me," she mused. "I didn't plan on its being that way. And f*ck me, it hasn't been easy, you know."
The actress married her current husband Rocknroll in December 2012. The couple's son, Bear, was born in December 2013.
Winslet can currently be seen starring in the film "Steve Jobs," which was released on Oct. 23.
